How do you bounce back from being made redundant? For many people, losing their job can be devastating. Yet, with the right perspective, it can be a stepping stone to a new career – and one that is more aligned with what you really want to do.

If you find yourself drifting in your career, feeling dissatisfied and with that little voice in your head telling you that you should be doing something else more in line with your passions and values, it is time to start listening.

This success story featuring early Power Up participant, Sarah, demonstrates how redundancy can be an opportunity to move forward with renewed purpose and energy.

The back story

Sarah was an HR director who joined The Power Up Program after six months of job searching having earlier been made redundant. Unfortunately, the arrival of COVID interrupted her job search but also gave her time to reflect on herself and what she wanted from her career.

Quite rightly, Sarah saw this period as an opportunity to work on her personal development and, as she puts it, “shake myself up a bit and feel inspired to find a new job”.

Discovering Power Up

To help her with this, Sarah thought she needed an outside perspective and a framework that would give her the space to explore what she really wanted. Power Up came along at the right time.

As Sarah says: “It was priced reasonably and because I wasn’t working was timed well with regular input on what I needed to do to get myself organised.”

Breakthrough

Everyone who comes into the Power Up program has a different focus – yet the common theme is a commitment to doing the reflective work to move forward and challenge oneself as to what you want from your future career.

Once within the supportive walls of the program, Sarah was able to take the time and space to consider her future.

“Most beneficial was I started to think about what I wanted about my future career,” Sarah says. “I was able to think about and it crystallised – and I ended up taking a business opportunity and moving forward with it.”

A change of direction

As the famous quote from Louis Pasteur goes: “Chance favours the prepared mind.” In Sarah’s case, a business opportunity arrived from an unexpected source to take on the role of setting up her own HR division.

“I had an approach from someone who set up a finance business and wanted to set up an HR arm and they had investors,” Sarah explains. “It was very fortunate to have the investment behind me to feel comfortable.”

As a result, Sarah had the opportunity to run a business with investors and a new outlook on her future.

“If I hadn’t done the programme, I would have been too scared to go ahead and do it,” says Sarah.

The Power Up Journey

Sarah recommends the Power Up Program to anyone who is looking to take their career to the next level and understand what they want from their career.
